Under a floated European Commission proposal, USB-C would become the only standard for wired smartphone charging, since proprietary formats like Apple’s Lightning prevent people from reusing cables and many other accessories. In fact, the initiative would cover more than just phones — headphones, portable speakers, and tablets are just some of the other targeted devices. In protest, Apple claims that the proposal would stifle innovation, but that was shot down by Anna Cavazzini, the chair of the European Parliament’s consumer protection committee, who pointed out that if something better than USB-C emerged, the rules would adapt . In the post, he commends his team for reaching some sales milestones. However, Pei also accuses a “major incumbent” of directly “attacking” his company through supply chain manipulation. Earlier this year, Carl Pei’s new post-OnePlus company released its first product: the Ear 1 true wireless earbuds . Today, Pei published a public blog post touting some major milestones of that product. In the post, Pei congratulates the team at Nothing for helping secure over 320,000 orders of the Ear 1 earbuds. Although only 180,000 of those orders have shipped, Pei is confident the rest will come soon. Now, one outlet says the company has already lost that status to the usual second-place holder Apple. Samsung is still far and away the leader, though. The update is only rolling out to enrolled users in South Korea and India for now. One UI 4 beta gives users an early look at Samsung’s plans for Android 12. Samsung is quick to update its phones to the latest major OS and security updates, and the same is true for beta software. After rolling out the big One UI 4 beta update to the Galaxy S21 series , Samsung has now added the Galaxy Z Fold 3 and Galaxy Z Flip 3 to the list of eligible devices. Revenues are reportedly up 12% year-on-year due to a focus on mid-tier and premium devices. The global chip shortage has been with us for a while now, resulting in smartphone companies being unable to quite meet demand. Now, Canalys and Counterpoint Research have revealed their global marketshare reports for Q3 2021, and it’s clear that the shortage has affected sales. Both research firms reported a 6% yearly decline in shipments over Q3 2020, confirming that the chip shortage was to blame. Samsung remained at the top of the pile according to both reports, but Apple passed Xiaomi for second place. Vivo and Oppo continue to outsell their competitors in the country, holding onto a combined 44% market share. Apple grew 62% year-over-year in the country. It’s been nearly a year since Huawei spun off Honor as an independent company. But while the former has floundered in all regions since, Honor has been on an upward trajectory, especially in its home market.
