Man fakes his death on Facebook to scam his family of funeral costs (Photos)

A Thai man, Tachawit Janngiw and his wife, have been accused of defrauding his family through funeral costs while faking his death.

According to Coconuts Bangkok, a few photos of the man’s “lifeless body” were posted to his Facebook account by his wife.

“Last photo before deactivating his Facebook,” the caption said.

“Love you.”

Concerned family and friends the man, were told that he died of cancer and asthma by his wife, but no one knew he was sick because he “pretended he was okay all along”. She then phoned the man’s mum, asking her to transfer her money for the funeral costs.

The ‘late’ man’s mother reportedly transferred roughly $800 to his wife, to transport her dead son’s body to a temple in his hometown. But when his wife never showed up with his body at the temple, his family tried to figure out what was going on. His cousin called the “dead” man’s phone and he actually answered it. Apparently the “dead” man quickly realized his mistake and quickly hung up.

Tachawit’s mother told the Morning News: “She said she didn’t have money to prepare the body, so I sent her money on that same day.”

According to her, the family has lost $1,800 funeral costs, but she doesn’t bear a grudge against him.

Outrage over the heatless ploy is now spreading over Facebook after the story appeared on Thai TV in recent days. Friends were, however, less forgiving, pointing out Tachawit’s alleged long history of lying and deceit.

Warit Meechochai said that included stealing the wallet of a friend on their way to donate a large sum of money to a temple. A former classmate who donated to the wreath for the funeral was more forthright.

“You b—–d, we regret going to school with you. We are hurt by this. Don’t ever let me see you again. Go to h–l.”

There’s no word on any police action being taken against the man, but he could reportedly face fraud charges and potentially cop a fine of more than $6000 or face jailtime.
